Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish-born author, best known for his stories about the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, which have shaped the genre of detective fiction ever since. His other works include the Professor Challenger stories, most famously The Lost World, and also stage plays including Waterloo and The House of Temperley.
