"Iolanthe" is a comic opera created by Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert, their seventh collaboration and one of the Savoy operas. Iolanthe is a fairy banished for marrying her mortal. Her son, Strephon, wishes to marry Phyllis, a Ward of Chancery, but she has a suitors in the House of Peers, and a misunderstanding when Phyllis sees Strephon and Iolanthe hugging leads to a confrontation between English high society and fairies.
