I found a survival-story chapter book in the library. I read the book, and loved it. Now I've moved, and the library is hours away and I can't remember the name of the book. I remember the following about the book:

  • It was about a runaway boy
  • He took a pocket knife, $40, flint and steel, and maybe a hatchet
  • He used fire to hollow out a tree and lived in it
  • He (I believe) met several friends, and had an adventure where a poacher was after him

The book used the words "In which" before chapter names (A trivial detail). It was a paperback chapter book (Junior or YA), in English. I read it at a very small library, maybe five years ago.

Was it an old book? In what language did you read it? We have some guidance here that should be able to help you add useful details to your question. – Gallifreyan Apr 16 '18 at 5:37

This sounds very much like My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George.

  • Please could you edit to add some more details about this story and why it fits the OP's description? You may well be right, but without including any description of the book, it's hard to tell. E.g. you could quote relevant parts of the descriptions from Wikipedia or Goodreads. See also our guidance on writing good story-ID answers. – Rand al'Thor Apr 17 '18 at 6:16
  • I thought the name of the book seemed familiar. I looked it up, and it's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! – Redwolf Programs Apr 18 '18 at 3:01
