Honore de Balzac’s masterpiece “Father Goriot” tells the story of a father who loves his two beautiful daughters as forms of God. The daughters, Delphine and Anastasie, didn’t ever truly cared for their father and all they wanted was money.

In his play ‘’The Dear Departed”, Houghton satirizes the degradation of moral values in the British middle-class. In trying to grab the things belonging to grandfather the children completely disregard modesty, decency and filial obligation. The materialistic attitudes of Mrs. Slater and Mrs. Jordan come in for better criticism.

Seeing the similarity between the main theme of thee two works, can we say “The Dear Departed” was influenced by “Father Goriot”?
