In The War of the Worlds, in Book 1 Chapter 12, one of the Martians is destroyed by artillery fire. Among all the themes that are prominent in the book, which theme would link to this moment best?

I thought that perhaps you could associate the destruction of the Martian with the theme of Imperialism as the British army were responsible for bringing down the Martian. But in hindsight, it would be a bit of a tenuous link because Imperialism refers more to the expansion of empires rather than singular military victories with no purpose of invasion or gaining more land.
